The only Cumbrian Village where the mountains of the Lake District National Park meet the sea, Ravenglass has been a strong local community for thousands of years. In 79 AD the Roman Fleet sailed into the beautiful natural harbour and built a large port and fort on the banks of the River Esk. After the Romans came the Vikings and in 1208 a Royal Charter was granted to hold a market.
Today Ravenglass is home to two of Cumbria’s best attractions – the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway and nearby Muncaster Castle with its famous gardens and World Owl Centre. As well as an inn, two hotels and a number of guesthouses in the Parish, there’s a caravan park and campsite, a craft shop, post office and mainline railway. Ravenglass today is still an active, vibrant community.
